In 2017,the Ministry of Education promulgated the "English Standards for Senior High Schools",which aims to develop English discipline core competency including language ability,cultural character,thinking quality and learning ability.Among them,the quality of students' thinking refers to their ability and level in logical,critical,and innovative aspects,which reflects the mental characteristics of English discipline core competency.The critical thinking skill is an important part of the quality of thinking,among English discipline core competency.Its characteristics of reflection and evaluation of problems are increasingly prominent in today's teaching methods.It helps to promote the cultivation of talents in all aspects,such as: the sociology-political and economic development,the advancement of science and technology,and the prosperity of culture.The students of senior high schools are a relatively special group because their outlook on life and values are undergoing tremendous changes at this time,and their self-awareness has begun to collide with the social environment.At this stage,if students can be properly guided and develop good thinking habits,this will benefit them for life.Therefore,from the perspective of English discipline core competency,the thesis explores the senior high school students' critical thinking skills in EFL reading by adopting both quantitative and qualitative research methods.The mixed-method research is answering the following three questions: the first is what is the status quo of senior high school students' critical thinking skills in EFL reading?Secondly,what are the problems of developing senior high school students' critical thinking skills in EFL reading? Thirdly,how to develop senior high school students' critical thinking ability in EFL reading from the perspective of core competency?This research first briefly outlines the basic concepts of critical thinking skill and English discipline core competency.And after consulting and analyzing the results of previous studies,the English discipline core competency and critical thinking skills are defined and summarized,and the dimensions of the questionnaire have beenanalyzed.After that,this research investigates the senior high school students and English teachers in the form of questionnaires,interviews and class observation,finding that the students' overall critical thinking skill activities are insufficient,the teachers' knowledge of teaching critical thinking skill is far from enough,and the students' critical thinking skill cultivation methods lacks certain expertise and training.In this perspective,it can be seen that the total critical thinking skills of the senior high school students are in a low level and needs to be improved.This research considers that the examination-oriented education is the main factor impacting the development of students 'critical thinking skill.Teachers should take students as the center of the class,create classroom thinking atmosphere,adopt multiple teaching methods and improve their own critical thinking skill for the purpose of senior high school student's development.
