Reading ability plays a very important role in English language ability.Training students' English reading ability is conducive to the development of students' writing ability and communication ability.At the same time,the improvement of students' reading ability is conducive to the development of students' language ability and learning ability.However,the traditional English reading teaching method is monotonous and boring.Teachers basically use grammar translation to teach reading.In teacher-led English reading teaching,teachers pay too much attention to basic knowledge and scores,ignore the cultivation of students' ability.These reasons lead to the following problems for students in English reading learning: At first,many students are not interested in English reading and lack motivation for English reading.Second,many students do not receive the guidance of reading strategies and have not formed a method of learning English autonomously.Finally,because many students lose interest in English,their reading performance is not satisfactory.This article studies how apply problem-based teaching method to English reading teaching.Problem-based teaching method is a problem-centered,student-centered,team-centered method.In the application of problem-based teaching method,teachers are mentors and promoters,students are in a real situation to think,analyze and discuss problems.The method could cultivate students' ability to solve problems,the ability of working with students and improve the students' reading interest and motivation.This study is an action research on the application of problem-based teaching method in English reading teaching in junior middle school.Based on the following three questions,this study makes an in-depth investigation and analysis of the application of problem-based teaching method in English reading teaching in junior middle school:1.What is the current situation of English reading teaching in junior middle school?2.How do teachers apply problem-based teaching method to English reading teaching in junior middle school?3.What effect does the application of problem-based teaching method have on students' English reading?The study is consisted of two rounds of action research for three months.The research subjects are 55 students from Class 6,Grade 8 in Huainan Wenhui Middle School.Each round of action research includes four steps: plan,action,observation and reflection.Before doing the first round of action research,the researcher does some surveys from students,including a questionnaire,an interview and a reading test.The aims of the surveys are to investigate the current situation of English reading teaching in this class,the students' attitude and performance in English reading.After analyzing the survey data,the researcher tries to apply problem-based teaching method to English reading teaching,the researcher adopts the following steps in class: 1.Create problem situations.2.Put forward problems.3.Analyze problems independently.4.Solve problems in groups.5.Show the results of the discussion.6.Summary and evaluation.At the end of the first round of action research,the second questionnaire,the second interview and the second English reading test are conducted.The researcher analyzes the results of the first round of action research and makes plans for the second round of action research.The second round of action research adds appropriate reading exercises,a rating system and grammar exercises.After doing the second round of action research,the researcher does the third questionnaire,the third interview and the third English reading test.Taking the results of the research into consideration,the researcher concludes that: 1.Problem-based teaching method is conducive to cultivating students' learning ability and English reading motivation.2.Problem-based teaching method helps students master a variety of reading strategies,which improves students' reading performance objectively.3.In the application of problem-based method in English reading teaching,students learn to think independently and cooperate with each other.Students also strengthen their ability to solve problems and sharpen their will to overcome difficulties.
