This dissertation selects texts of Thinking in Java(4th Edition),Effective Java: Second Edition and their Chinese versions to construct a bilingual parallel corpus.Based on the self-constructed corpus, the study is guided by the conceptual metaphor theory proposed by Lakoff and Johnson and supported by the conceptual blending theory. The dissertation categorizes Java programming terminologies with conceptual metaphors according to the three characteristics of Java, and summarizes the strategies and methods of translating ontological metaphors, structural metaphors, conduit metaphors, orientational metaphors and image metaphors in Java terminologies. The research is composed of six chapters.Chapter One notes the research background, research content, corpus source and research methodology, and expounds research significance to the future development and localization of the information technology industry by using case-based and statistical analysis.Chapter Two is the literature review, focusing on computer-related metaphor analysis and translation as well as corpus-based translatology both at home and abroad.Chapter Three introduces the theory of conceptual metaphor.Chapter Four analyzes the metaphors in programming terminologies according to the characteristics of Java, and combs out seven kinds of metaphors in terms of Java's inheritance, encapsulation and polymorphism.Chapter Five classifies the metaphors in Java programming terminologies and analyses the typical examples of the corpus. Finally, the conclusions are drawn:(1)The cause of the existing metaphors in Java programming language is object-oriented programming thinking, which is embodied in different types of conceptual metaphors derived from the three characteristics of Java language. The number of Java terminologies and their derived classes involved in this study accounts for 37.9% of the total number of Java 8 classes. It can be seen that the proportion of programming terms with metaphors is quite considerable.(2)There are five types of conceptual metaphors in Java programming terminologies.Ontological metaphors(mainly container metaphors)and image metaphors are derived from the encapsulation of Java language;structural metaphors, personification metaphors and orientational metaphors are derived from inheritance;and structural metaphors and conduit metaphors are derived from polymorphism. The three characteristics of Java and the metaphor genres are cross-related rather than parallel.(3)There are three strategies of translating metaphors in Java terminologies: contextual relevance, translation shifts and SL reservation. There are four translation methods: vehicle recreation, literal translation of the vehicle,TT matching and optimization and amplification.Among the Java classes and their derived classes involved in this study, translations abiding by contextual relevance account for 13.6% of all Java 8 classes, translations abiding by translation shifts account for 23.6%,and all the translations follow the strategy of SL reservation. In terms of translation methods, translations adopting vehicle recreation account for 18%,translations adopting literal translation of the vehicle account for 12%,those adopting TT matching and optimization account for 7%,and the figure of amplification is 2%.(4)Metaphors in programming terminologies are different from the imagination and creation of literary works. They mostly come from people's cognition in daily life or other disciplines.Just like the mapping from the source domain to the target domain in a metaphor, most of the classes defined by Java correspond to the objects in the objective world. Therefore, when translating metaphors in programming terminologies, translators need to distinguish the prototypes of designing patterns in the real world or learn from the existing translation from adjacent disciplines. The research purpose is to explore the metaphors in Java programming terminologies and the cause of them and to provide methods that are different from those of translating literary metaphors and suitable for the information technology industry. The study also aims to fill the blank due to the lack of official translation of original programming documents,to accelerate the localization of programming terminologies,to reduce the cost of learning and understanding for developers, and to promote programming languages as well as their translation standards in China.
