This dissertation is organized around the immigration of Tongzhou(Nantong),Rugao,Chongming,Haimen,Qidong(hereinafter referred to as "five counties")immigrants and their associations in modern Shanghai.First of all,from the perspective of economic structure,social sentiment,and cultural characteristics of the five counties,and then combined with the opening of Shanghai's commercial ports and the political and social changes in the lower reaches of the Yangtze River since the middle of the19 th century,Combined with "push-pull",explain the background and employment characteristics of the five counties' relocation to Shanghai.In the process of Shanghai's industrialization and urbanization,immigrants from the five counties of the Yangtze River Estuary formed the same township identity under similar geographical and cultural conditions.After leaving their homeland,they worked hard in Shanghai.Although engaged in different professions,the bonds of their hometown linked them closely.With the increasing number of people coming to Shanghai from various counties,the associations have been established and gradually developed.The associations have become more business-friendly,with distinct geographical and business characteristics.Since then,with the increase in the number of immigrants in the five counties,and the government's successive regulations in the township and industry organizations,the development of the township association has also been institutionalized.From "Tongru Chonghai Qihui Hall" to "Tongru Chonghai Qi Tongxiang",people from the five counties have established extensive social connections in Shanghai.A chievements have also been made in mutual assistance and public welfare.This paper has conducted a detailed and in-depth discussion on the formation of immigrant groups from five counties in Shanghai,the establishment of fellow organizations,and related activities.This article attempts to use the activities of the five counties of “Tongru Chonghaiqi” in modern Shanghai as a sample to explore immigrant groups and fellow village organizations,and to reveal the value and significance of their research.In modern Shanghai,immigrants from different regions have different characteristics in occupational distribution and within the samevillage organization,which requires us to investigate in depth.At the same time,we must also pay attention to the changes in the function of fellow village organizations in different periods.On the one hand,as a traditional hometown hall,its functions continue to be maintained,including introducing occupations for immigrants,handling funerals,and moving coffins,etc.;on the other hand,it has been given new functions,including helping in the event of disaster in its hometown.,And using the advantages of the Shanghai Metropolis and the increasingly concentrated energy of fellow townships to communicate the relationship between immigrants and local governments,it has played a great role in serving local society and stabilizing local order.
