In 491 A.D.,when Anastasius ? succeeded to the throne of the Byzantine Empire, the empire was ruined by civil wars and barbarians invasions.Besides, there was an Acacian schism between the eastern and western churches of the empire in 491 A.D.Faced with such situation,Anastasius ? decided to adjust and improve church relations within the Empire in order to bring peace to the empire.Given the economic and military importance of the eastern part of the empire,as well as a substantial number of monotheists in the eastern part of the empire,Anastasius ? expected to implement his religious policies by appointing bishops of Constantinople. However,in the context of Acacian schism,Chalcedonism and Monophysitism were in serious opposition, the emperor's religious policy did not solve the schism but caused many other problems.Although Anastasius ? failed to achieve religious peace and end the Acacian schism, there were neither great invasions nor security threats caused by sectarian strife throughout his presidency.Besides,Anastasius ? left a huge legacy for the Byzantine Empire after his death. It remains to be seen whether the religious policy of Anastasius ? was a failure or not.
