With the continuous advancement of artificial intelligence,a lot of work has been gradually replaced by AI,which spurs and pushes us to cultivate the higher order thinking ability in our students, which artificial intelligence does not possess.Thinking is driven by questions.Posing questions in class is one of the effective ways to develop students'higher order thinking. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to identify and investigate the most efficient and effective questioning strategies used by teachers to promote the development of senior high school students' higher order thinking in English. The present study mainly explores the following questions:1)What questioning strategies are used by English teachers in the classroom and the reasons why they use the strategies?2)What's the current situation of students' higher order thinking and the correlation between questioning strategies and students'higher order thinking?3)What types of questioning strategies can be used to stimulate the students' higher order thinking?Quantitative and qualitative research methods are adopted in this study. In the aspects of quantitative research method, the data of two questionnaires are analyzed through the SPSS software.Descriptive statistics analysis and correlation analysis are carried out.In the aspects of qualitative research method,a semi-structured interview is conducted with four English teachers in order to identify the reasons why they use certain strategies. This study involves four senior high school English teachers and 180 students.Data are collected from multiple sources, including classroom observations, questionnaires and interviews.Based on classroom observation and questionnaires, this paper summarizes the questioning strategies used by English teachers in the classroom',the current situation of students' higher order thinking, the correlation between questioning strategies and students' higher order thinking and those questioning strategies that are efficient and effective for stimulating students' higher order thinking. The results show that the questioning strategies used by teachers include close-display questions,open-referential questions and follow-up questions, giving waiting time(average 4.5 seconds),giving positive feedback and using the questioning techniques of probing, prompting and repetition. The reasons why teachers prefer to use these types of questioning strategies include recalling students' understanding, attracting students' attention and improving students' thinking to a higher order level. Moreover,it can be concluded that the development level of higher order thinking varies among students and overall,it is at the medium level.According to the scoring standards of each dimension, students'higher order thinking is better developed in terms of truth-seeking and cognitive maturity.Furthermore, the findings show that the number of questions, the types of questions and the waiting time of teachers are correlated with students' higher order thinking, among which open-referential questions,follow-up questions and the length of waiting time are positively correlated with students' higher order thinking. Finally, students' higher order thinking ability can be strengthened by asking open-referential questions and follow-up questions, giving enough waiting time, giving positive feedback and using the question techniques of rephrasing, chaining, prompting, decomposition, probing and repetition.
