Based on Freud's theory of death instinct and the analyzing method of close reading and qualitative analysis, this paper analyzes the psychological process of the transformation of Charles' s death instinct from the subconscious to the conscious in Iris Murdoch's novel The Sea,the Sea,the reasons why the death instinct is suppressed, and the reasons for and the result of the transformation of Charles' s death instinct from the subconscious to the conscious,so as to explore the role of consciousness in moral realization. This article is divided into five chapters. The first chapter includes the introduction of the author of this book, literature review and a brief introduction to the theory of death instinct. The second chapter mainly demonstrates that Charles' s death instinct exists as a kind of subconsciousness. The death instinct is mainly reflected by his dream, illusion negation, and resistance to the awareness of death. The third chapter illustrates the reasons why Charles suppresses his death instinct, such as his mother's religious influence and his own fear of death. The fourth chapter analyzes the transformation of Charles' s death instinct from the subconscious to the conscious.Charles, driven by his death instinct, has a destructive influence on himself and others. However, under the influence of reality,he rediscovers himself and realizes the existence of his death instinct, thus realizing goodness. The fifth chapter is the conclusion.Based on the above analysis, the following conclusions are drawn. The repressed death instinct does harm to Charles' s realization of morality. The way to goodness advocated by Murdoch lies not in the superego or unified moral standards, but in individual's ego or consciousness because the awareness of subconsciousness can promote one to adjust his or her unethical behaviors.Based on Freud's death instinct, this thesis discovers that this novel contains Murdoch's moral thought, namely consciousness as fundamental mode of moral being. To be good, the individual is required to pay attention to the reality to strengthen his or her consciousness.
