A Report On The Translation Of Where The Crawdads Sing(Excerpt)

This paper is a report on the translation of Where the Crawdads Sing(Chapter 20 to Chapter 30),written by Delia Owens,an American wildlife scientist and writer.In light of the characteristics of the original text,the translator adopts the strategy of explicitation to guide the translation practice partly for serving the target readers and helping them understand and partly for achieving better aesthetic effect in literature.As a common translation phenomenon,explicitation means that the information implied in the original text or the vague expressions are put in a clear language in the translation.The target texts are often longer,more logical and easier to understand than the original texts because of the addition of information implied in the original ones.This report analyzes explicitation in the translated version of Where the Crawdads Sing from perspectives of contextual meaning,literary image and emotion to solve the problems encountered in the process of translation.Among these three categories,explicitation of literary image and explicitation of emotion are relatively innovative,since very few scholars have paid enough attention to these perspectives.In the translation,the translator has explicated some implicit information in the original text so as to serve the cross-cultural communication.The strategy adopted by the translator is not an end,but a means to realize its faithfulness and achieve an optimal effect in translation.
