| This report is based on the E-C translation of chapters1-3 and 11 of The Orphan’s Song,a historical romance novel by American writer Lauren Kate.In the selected chapters,the encounter,parting and reunion of the hero and heroine,as well as the profile of the Republic of Venice are depicted vividly and incisively.Western historical romance novel owns a sound foundation,appealing to both refined and popular tastes,and plays an increasingly prominent role in enriching the spiritual culture of the masses and broadening the historical horizon of the public.This report aims at analyzing the difficulties the translator has encountered and translation strategies applied in the process of translating historical romance novel.Based on Newmark’s communicative translation theory,and taking the excerpts of the historical romance novel The Orphan’s Song as an example,this translation report aims to explore the translation strategies in translating historical romance novels.In the process of translation,the translator finds that the source text is rich in places,names and musical terminologies,long and complex sentences and lyrics.These characteristics determined that the translator’s primary task was to transfer information and make the translation readable.Given this,the translation report attempts to do case studies from the perspective of terminologies,long and complex sentences,and lyrics translation.Under the guidance of communicative translation theory,intratextual and extratextual annotation can be used in terminologies translation.Restructuring sentence structures,turning phrases into clauses and adding conjunctions are effective in translating long and complex sentences.Free and literal translation can be adopted in lyrics translation.The historical romance novels have significant linguistic features,which brings some challenges to the translator.The translator should adhere to the principle of communicative translation theory and “readers first”,and strive to achieve smooth communication of the translation. |
