Research On The Visual Representation Of Documentary Photography Of New Century In Rural Areas

This article takes the Hou Dengke Documentary Photography Award and the "Xu Xiaobing" Cup China Documentary Photography Exhibition works as research objects,and uses text analysis and quantitative statistics to explore the relationship between documentary photography and reproduce rural communities and many problems that documentary photography to reproduce rural communities since the beginning of the new century,including reproduction techniques,the visual system and power relations behind the reproduction behavior,under the framework of visual culture and representation theory.By briefly reviewing the development of documentary photography in world and China,the researcher found that it is an important tradition for documentary photography to reproduce the "bottom group",which has been prominent since the rise of documentary photography—the documentary photography of the 90 s made a large-scale reproduction of the countryside.After quantifying statistics on 1,126 sample photos of rural reconstruction,it was found that documentary photography since the new century has used selective production to reproduce rural areas.When choosing the shooting space(house,field,road),scene(production,life,education),characters(elderly,children,young adults),color(black and white,color),perspective and scene,all show a certain Tendency.Through this selective production,what we see is a gray and overlooked world that is still struggling with land and the environment.They are bound by primitive labor all year round and have little cultural and entertainment life.They face Poor living and education environment.Behind this choice is the operation and influence of visual establishment,documentary photography tradition,and the power of gaze.The visual establishment mainly includes: documentary photography exhibition("Chinese person orientation"-documentary in contemporary),documentary photography awards(Hou Dengke documentary photography award and "Xu Xiaobing" Cup documentary photography exhibition in China)and documentary photography network communication platform.Their aesthetics of rural subjects are still maintained in the preferences formed in the 1990 s,which has led to documentary photography since the new century to reproduce the countryside in the same perspective and way.
