A C-E Translation Of Traditional Excellent Works Of Guilin Yugu Drama(Excerpts)and Its Work Report

Guilin Yugu Drama is a folk art sung in Guilin dialect and performed through talking and singing.It has been listed as intangible cultural heritage at the provincial and national levels.At present,Guilin Yugu Drama is mainly facing such crises as aging of inheritors,declining attention from audiences and shortage of professional actors.Furthermore,its English texts are rarely found.Hence,there is an urgent need to translate texts of Guilin Yugu Drama properly and reasonably according to the local culture.Under this circumstance,the source text of this translation project is selected from Traditional Excellent Works of Guilin Yugu Drama.Guided by the rules of skopos,coherence and fidelity in Skopos Theory,this project aims at studying the translation of culture-loaded words,four-character phrases,titles of works and lyrics of Guilin Yugu Drama,etc.The report first introduces the source text,the purposes and significance of the study.Then the process of translation including preparation work,specific translation steps and proofreading is described and a brief introduction to the Skopos Theory is given.The following case study is an important part of the report.According to the guiding theory,the translator comprehensively adopted a variety of translation strategies and methods like transliteration plus annotation,addition,omission,generalization,free translation and transposition to deal with the translation of culture-loaded words,four-character phrases,titles of works and lyrics of Guilin Yugu Drama.In the end,the translator concludes that analyzing the source text from the smallest textual unit to the whole text is a bottom-up approach and the more reasonable process should be from the purpose to the smallest unit.In other words,translators should determine the purpose of translation first,then analyze the function of the text,consider the factors of target readers,communication and culture as well as the features of the target language,and finally organize the whole text,arrange the sentences and choose appropriate words.
