A Report On The E-C Translation Of China's Scientific And Technological News In Foreign Media

This translation report takes the English-Chinese translation of news about the progress of science and technology in China as the research object.The report chooses 30 pieces of scientific and technological news concerning Chang'e 4 and Huawei's 5G technology from foreign media as the source texts for translation and adopts the appraisal system as the guiding theory.The appraisal system,putting forward by Australian linguist Martin,is based on systemic functional linguistics.It explores the interpersonal significance of a text by analyzing the attitude,engagement and graduation.The translator applies this theory to translation practice and analyses the news texts about China's scientific and technological progress from three aspects: attitude,engagement and graduation,so as to accurately grasp the attitude of foreign media towards China's scientific and technological progress and reproduce it in the translation.This translation report consists of five chapters.Chapter One is the task description including an introduction to the source text,features of the news text,significance and structure of the report.Chapter Two is the process description,namely,preparation before translation,difficulties encountered in translation and proofreading after translation.Chapter Three is the theoretical framework introducing the appraisal system briefly at first,describing its development at home and abroad and discussing its application in translation at last.Chapter Four is the case study that explores translation skills by analyzing the source texts based on the appraisal system including attitude,engagement and graduation.The last chapter summarizes the report and presents limitations and suggestions.This report reveals that a considerable amount of appraisal resources are used in the news texts to express opinions and achieve interpersonal significance.The translator explores translation skills by analyzing the news texts based on the appraisal system.In terms of the attitude,most of the attitude resources in the source texts are processed through literal translation.However,some of the resources are implicit and it requires the translator to take the cultural context as well as the international relations into consideration to dig out the deeper attitude in the source text.In the engagement,faithful translation is the primary means in translating engagement resources to highlight the authenticity of news and cultivate a situation that readers can rely on.In translating the resources of graduation,the translator associates it with attitude,because the graduation resources are used to strengthen or weaken the attitude resources,and to clarify or blur the attitude boundaries.It can be said that the appraisal system provides an analytical framework for news text translation,and discusses the purpose of discourse and the attitude of the speakers from the perspective of attitude resources,so as to effectively guide translation practice.
