Multiparty democracy has ushered in competitive elections as well as transforming political landscapes.The paper focused on the influence and impact of political ideology on social and economic development of Nigeria.Nigerian political parties have been founded and anchored on ideology ranging from social democracy.Political ideologies have also been used in political campaigns and mobilization.The research also tried to show the link between electoral outcomes and political party ideology.The focus of the research was on APC and PDP which are the main Nigerian political parties.The ideas that they propagate as well as the issues they stand for were examined.The study showed results that have increasing levels of ideological conflict between the two political parties and reduced voter turnout among other findings.This paper seeks to provide the strongest evidence to date of how mass political behavior is conditioned by electoral choice and the importance of institutionalized ideological concepts for political parties towards socio-economic development in Nigeria.
