An Analysis About Indonesia's Hedging Strategy Towards China

In the backgroung of China's rise and increasingly complicated situation in the Asia and Pacific Rim,based on considerations of national interests and domestic political environment,Indonesia adopts hedging strategy towards China in order to maximize interests and avoid risks.On the one hand,Indonesia continues to deepen its economic,political and military relations with China,and hopes to obtain maximum interests from the rise of China;On the other hand,ln order to avoid uncertain risk arising from China's rise,Indonesia has adopted the regional multilateral system such as the ASEAN mechanism to regulate and restrict China's behavior,in the meanwhile,Indonesia actively develops economic,political and military relations with the power of big countries outside the region like the United States and Japan,and uses the power of big countries outside the region to balance China's economic,political,and military influence,in addition,Indonesia has also internally checked and balanced China through military modernization and military deployment in the adjacent waters of the Natuna Islands.Indonesia'^hedging strategy towards China has had an important and dual influence on the relations between China and Indoneisa,the South China Sea issue and the geopolitical environment in Southeast Asia.In the short time,Indonesia's hedging strategy towards China will continue to exist,the economic,political and cultural relations between China and Indonesia are expected to be strengthened,however,the level of military and strategic mutual trust may be restricted.When it comes to Indonesia's hedging strategy towards China,on the one hand,China should raise Indonesia's economic expectations from China's rise as much as possible,on the other hand,China should take corresponding measures to ease Indonesia's security threat perception to China's rise.On this basis,China should give impetus to the stable development of bilateral relations,and promote Indonesia's hedging strategy toward China in a positive direction,and settling the South China Sea dispute in a peaceful way and create a good surrounding geopolitical environment for China's deplovement.
