China has been a firm supporter of the UN principles which were laid out in Articles 1-2 of the UN Charter and further spelled out in the 1970 Declaration on Principles of International Law Concerning Friendly Relations and Co-operation among States in Accordance with the Charter of the United Nations.This paper explores and discusses China's view and practice in regard to self-determination,which is the first time that this question is reviewed.Firstly,this paper states the history and content of self-determination.Secondly,this paper states China's principled and realistic position at self-determination.Thirdly,this paper states China's position at international practice about self-determination.In conclusion,China holds that sovereignty is the most important principle in contemporary international law while self-determination is as a basic principle subject to sovereignty and territorial integrity of a sovereign state pursuant to the 1970 UN Declaration on Principles of International Law.
