The most challenging environmental issue of our time is climate change, which has already had some observable consequences. There is no simple way to deal with the problem, simply because it is impossible to ban the greenhouse gas traveling from one place to another, crossing the boundaries.Apparently, coordinated international action is essential to protecting Earth's climate.States agree to climate change treaties that oblige member states to reduce emissions in return for long-term benefit.Interestingly, after hard negotiation, signature and ratification,a few states exited the climate change treaties that they had previously ratified. The thesis will focus on climate change treaty exit from the perspective of law and economics. The thesis is focused on multilateral climate change treaties.Since there are not many exit cases, only a few states exited the multilateral climate change treaties,it is almost impossible to do apples to apples comparison.Case studies will be conducted to analyze the rationale behind the exit. The structure of the thesis is as follows: Chapter one will present theoretical framework.Analysis methods will be introduced in Chapter two.Game theory and cost & benefit analysis will be discussed in this chapter.Chapter three will focus on the research question in the perspective of law and economics.Through the analysis,it is found that it would be irrational to exit climate change treaty out of pure state interests. To cope with global warming, the Pareto-optimal outcome only will be reached through global collaboration.
