In political tradition, the term ‘utopia' is regarded as the alternative plan of the existed world: a different world which is unrealizable or almost unrealizable. However, the challenges to this come from both theoretical and practical perspectives. From theoretical perspectives,it seems to be impossible to prove neither the realizabilities nor unrealizabilities of the utopia. When we call a plan is ‘utopian' we conjecture the plan is unrealizable. The problem is that people are limited by their social backgrounds;it appears to be unrealistic for them to understand social progresses under a particular historical circumstance without bias. From practical perspectives, many socalled ‘utopian communities' appeared since 17 th century. Those communities attempted to achieve some utopian thoughts. Many utopian communities were born out of More's book Utopia. Moreover, unlike those isolated utopian communities in the 19 th century, the communities in 20 th century played influential and significant roles in social developments. In this paper,I aim to claim that there is an uncertainty of the realizability of utopian thoughts. The utopian communities in 20 th century will be mainly discussed in this dissertation. The main arguments of this paper are to firstly figure out the essential factors that resulting the realizability/unrealizability of the utopia;secondly, the essay aims to explore how influential those factors are.
