Spain,as a multi-ethnic country, has been regarded by the international community as a successful example of the governance of relations among different ethnic groups in a multi-ethnic country because it firmly democratized in a non-centralized transitional way after the end of Franco dictatorship and developed a characteristic system of regional autonomy to effectively ease tensions among different ethnic groups in the country. However, because of the complicated historical, ethnic and economic relations with Spain, there has always been a demand for the expansion of autonomy in Catalonia. For a long time, the two sides have not compromised on their respective positions and failed to deal with their differences in an effective way, resulting in deepening contradictions, decreasing political mutual trust, and eventually evolving into a separatist movement, which triggered many demonstrations and independent referendums. On October 1,2017,the referendum on separatism was the most representative event in the development of separatist movement in Catalonia in recent years. It triggered a huge separation crisis and political turmoil in Spain, and also caused strong repercussions worldwide. So,what are the causes of separatism in Catalonia and its evolution into a separatist movement? Why should an independent referendum be held? What impact will it have on the situation in Spain and the region? What is its future trend and possible solutions? The outbreak of Catalonia's Separatist crisis is the result of the combination of historical and realistic factors. For a long time after the merger of Catalonia with the Kingdom of Castilla to form the Kingdom of Spain,Catalonia did not show strong separatist intentions, and its nationalism was dominated by Federalism or republicanism. It only demanded that the autonomous region should be granted a greater degree of autonomy to protect and develop its distinct characteristics of history, culture and language. However, because of serious differences with Catalonia, the central government of Spain has repeatedly refused to expand Catalonia's autonomy, resulting in deepening historical resentment between the two sides, gradually triggering the latter's national consciousness and centrifugal tendency.Influenced by the economic crisis,Spain's domestic economic development has stagnated, resulting in the reduction of welfare and the increase of unemployment rate.Separatists believe that the long-term implementation of fiscal and taxation policies different from other autonomous regions has further increased Catalonia's economic burden, and led the problem to nationalism and separatism, describing the political, economic, cultural and welfare aspects after the separation. The bright prospects and blueprints of this area will continue to push forward the process of separation and eventually lead to a political crisis. After the declaration of Catalonia's independence, the Spanish government promptly launched Article 155 of the Constitution, dissolved the Autonomous Government and Parliament of Catalonia and took over by the Spanish Government, which also declared the temporary failure of the Catalonian National Separatist Movement. However, the growing Separatist movement in Catalonia will undoubtedly pose a serious threat to Spain's sovereignty and national security, undermining economic development and social stability.Separation activities will also lead to the effect of separatist forces in Europe and other countries to a certain extent, which will adversely affect the process of European integration and regional stability. However, its legitimacy and legitimacy are far from the Scottish referendum on independence, and the demonstration effect is limited. At present, the separatist movement in Catalonia has not stopped, and further observation is needed for its future development. The Spanish Government and the Autonomous Government of Catalonia should negotiate more actively within the framework of the Constitution in order to find the best solution to the crisis.
