A Study Of The National Separatist Movement In Scotland

Nationalism is a problem which is quite popular in the current international society,it promoted the development of the movement for the national liberation in the early days,and it accelerated the collapse of the colonial system,so a large number of nation countries established,which had great positive significance to the international society.However,since the Soviet Union’s disintegration in the 1990 s and the end of the Cold War,ethnic separatism movement has become the mainstream of the third tide of nationalism.Therefore some ethnics became independent nations,while some ethnics,by violent means or wars,are trying hard to build national countries.It’s without doubt that the ethnic separatism movement had been existed before the third tide of nationalism,but it broke out only in the 1990 s on a large scale.By the inertia of the third tide of nationalism,all the world today still couldn’t get rid of the troubles which are brought by the ethnic separatism.Whether in the less developed Africa regions and the developing countries or the developed countries,all have become the participants of the tide,so ethnic separatism become the most outstanding problems.It is generally recognized that violence is the main characteristic of the ethnic separatism movement,thus often lead to large scale confrontations or wars,so it has a great negative impact on the international community.Illicit is another characteristic of the ethnic separatism movement,the principle of national self-determination which it often advocated is shaky.Along with the intervention of external forces,ethnic separatism movements are becoming more and more strong,and they are becoming a source of regional instability.Because of the characteristics of the ethnic separatism movement,it brought extensive damage to the development of countries and regions,and it affects people’s normal daily life and economic activities severely,so it has great negative effects to a country or a region,thus it rarely get the support of the international community.Although ethnic separatism movements remain widespread all over the world,but they are very different among different regions.Compared with other ethnic separatism movements,Scotland ethnic separatist movement developed in a non-violent way,thus made it different from the general ethnic separatism movements.Scotland ethnic separatist movement has been existed for a very long time,it has its own reasons,such as the history,ethnic identity and the economy.It alsodeveloped in a particular way.Under the leadership mainly by the Scottish National Party(SNP),Scotland separatist movement developed in a moderate political mode.It’s main characteristics are nonviolence and there was no intervention by outside powers,thus all made it distinct from other countries or regions’ ethnic separatism movements.The Scotland referendum turned out that the Scotland separatist movement failed temporarily,however,in the process of managing the Scotland separatist movement properly,both the Scotland government and the Britain government showed self-restraint,which is an important factor to make it nonviolent.As for it’s effects,the damage is less than the ethnic separatism movement which mainly use the violent ways. However,Scotland separatism movements still didn’t stop,we need to take further observation for its future development.
