A Multimodal Discourse Analysis Of The Political Feature Film

In November 2013,the Third Plenary Session of the Eighteenth Central Committee of the Party adopted“Decision of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China on Some Major Issues Concerning Comprehensively Deepening the Reform”.After several years of practice,“deepening reform” has achieved fruitful achievements.The political feature film " Carry the Reform through to the End " was born before the 19 th National Congress of the Communist Party of China.As an important paradigm for disseminating the "reform" discourse,it is an excellent TV program full of depth of thought and rich in artistic expression.Later,it caused a strong social response,united strength and united the hearts of the people.The success of "Carry the Reform through to the End" is inseparable from the innovation of its content and form.The three major modes of language,vision and hearing are the main components of the internal symbol system of the feature film.In order to examine the representational meaning of each modal system and the paths to participate in the construction of the "reform" discourse,the research is based on systematic functional linguistic theories,using Halliday's functional grammar and Kress & van Leeuwen's visual grammar,and multimodal discourse analysis(MDA)is made on the political feature film " Carry the Reform through to the End ".The dissertation begins with four parts: context,language modality,visual modality,and auditory modality.Among them,In the context of research,it has found that the external practice of the forty years of reform and opening up and the ideological requirements for comprehensively deepening reform are the macro context of discourse activities.The study of language modalities is discussed in the functional grammar framework and it has found that the commentary of "Performing Reform to the End" is of great significance in planning the reform landscape,demonstrating reform power,strengthening reform authority,and deepening reform approval.In addition,the commentary is narrated in objective and determined language,with a firm and decisive modal expression and positive and abundant emotional rendering to establish a connection with the viewer and complete the transmission of interpersonal meaning.The discourse cohesion in the commentary is intended to simplify the meaning expression and reduce the distance between the feature film and the viewer.In the visual modality,the framework based on visual grammar,and it has found that the frequently used meaning-constructing elements in visual images reflect the functions and features of the feature film in highlighting the reform image,presenting the reform subject,emphasizing the reform position,and displaying the reform dividend.In the auditory mode,it has found that the simultaneous voice was shaped the image of the leader,strengthened the authority of the policy,and reflected the effectiveness of the reform.The dubbing and music blend with the scenes of the feature film,sublimate the expression of emotion.Finally,the paper explores the mechanism of the synergy of the three modalities,and points out that the path of the three modalities participating in the construction of the meaning of the "reform" discourse is mainly reflected in three aspects: identity construction,knowledge construction,and media transmission.Finally,the thesis explores the value orientation of feature films from the mainstream political propaganda and public opinion orientation,discusses the construction effect of discourse.
