In German Ideology,Marx and Engels absorb the though of Plato and Adam Smith's think division of labor comes from the need and talent of people.They think it is true that Adam Ferguson consider that division of labor has two side for people on the other hand it makes people positive,another hand it lets people dull.They study division of labor in philosophy perspective.In German Ideology,Marx and Engels think,The initial division of labor is spontaneous division of labor.Owing to productivity improvement?more and more people?people's need enhancement and formation of consciousness productivity consisted of mental labor and material labor.Division of labor the cause of mental work separates from material labor.The reason that the separate of between city and village is real division of labor?the emergence of the merchant class?national Development and the reform of production relations.The development of division of labour is not isolated,it connecting with human development and the change of production tools.Division of labor has the advantage of promoting social development but it hinders the development of human.The division of labor leads to the alienation of human beings.Only annihilate old type of division of labor people realize man's overall and free development.However,in German Ideology,Marx and Engels' understanding of the division of labor still remained in the period of Economic and Philosophical Manuscripts of 1844.They did not distinguish between social division of labor and industrial division of labor.It was not until the period of Das Kapital that they put forward that social division of labor was the premise of division of labor in handicraft industry.
