Subordination And Independence

After Donald Trump took office,the China-US strategic competition has intensified as US regarding China as the strategic rivalry and revisionist.Meanwhile,US Taiwan policy also has gone through the relatively deep change.Most Chinese scholars think US is playing Taiwan card,which regards Taiwan as a bargaining chip with China or a containing tool for China.This view actually holds that US.Taiwan policy is subordinate to US China strategy.However,many foreign academics have different opinions that don't view Taiwan policy as the subordination to US China strategy.This article believes that after the Cold War,although US Taiwan policy is basically subordinate to its China strategy,there is also a certain degree of independence within this relationship.It is oversimplified to summarize the overall US Taiwan policy with the concepts of ‘subordination' and ‘containing China with Taiwan'.Through a historical review of the post-Cold War US policy toward Taiwan and its China strategy,this article finds that the US Taiwan policy can be basically regarded as the subordination to its China strategy,but there are some cases different from it.On this basis,this article uses variables of China-US relations,US-Taiwan relations,US politics and Taiwan politics to explain the hypothesis that US Taiwan policy is basically but not always subordinate to its China strategy.This article emphasizes that we should recognize the complexity of the US Taiwan policy.We cannot simply think that the adjustment of the US Taiwan policy definitely results from changes in US China strategy,and more attention needs to be paid to the complex influences of US-Taiwan relations,US politics,and Taiwan politics.
