In thousands years,with exchange,interaction and convergence among every ethnics of China,a social pattern of diversity in unity is formed.In new era,the fundamental direction of Chinese nation unity and progress constructing-work is to strength Chinese nation community awareness.Diversity in unity is the distinguishing characteristic of the Chinese nation community.It is necessary to deal with the relationship between diversity and unity in order to strength Chinese nation community awareness.So it is necessary to construct identity for Chinese nation diversity in unity of members of different ethnics,which means that everyone need to identify his ethnic(diversity identity),and he also need to identify Chinese nation(unity identity).Undergraduates are the future of the Chinese nation,their identity for diversity in unity of Chinese nation is meaningful for constructing Chinese nation community awareness.The intention of this study is to learn the status quo of undergraduates' Chinese nation diversity in unity identity,and then to discuss educational strategies to construct undergraduates' identity for Chinese nation diversity in unity.This study used questionnaire and took 451 undergraduates(N? = 145,N? = 306)from four universities as research object to examine the prominence and importance of three identities,nation identity(diversity),Chinese nation identity and national identity(unity),and the relationship among these variables,and used interview to supplement results of this study.The results showed:(1)Among three identities(ethnic identity/Chinese nation identity/national identity),the ethnic identity is the most prominent,the ethnic identity is much prominent than the Chinese nation identity.(2)In general,undergraduates positively identify their ethnic groups/Chinese nation and China.(3)There is significant difference between two types of university in ethnic identity,which is that the undergraduates' ethnic identity of ethnic universities is higher than undergraduates of general universities.And there is no significant gender and ethnic difference in nation identity.(4)There is no significant difference between majority ethnic and minority ethnics in Chinese nation identity and national identity.But there is significant difference male and female,which is that females' Chinese nation identity and national identity is higher than males'.(5)There is significant difference between two types of universities in national identity,which is that undergraduates' national identity of general universities is higher than undergraduates' national identity of ethnic universities.(6)There is positive relationship among ethnic identity/Chinese nation identity and national identity,but there is difference between majorities and minorities in the positive relationship.Based on the result and discussion of this study,this paper draws the following conclusions:Firstly,undergraduates have positive awareness for diversity in unity of Chinese nation,which is reflected in the fact that undergraduates identify positively their ethnic groups,and they also have a positive identity for Chinese nation and China.Secondly,undergraduates can place shared identity(Chinese nation identity and China national identity)in an important position.However,in daily life,the Chinese nation identity is not enough prominent,so we should use kinds of social media to spotlight it.Thirdly,there is difference among some demographical variables in ethnic identity/Chinese nation identity and national identity.Undergraduates' ethnic identity in ethnic universities is higher than peers' nation identity in general universities,and undergraduates' ethnic identity in general universities is higher than the peer's in ethnic universities,which shows that the coincidence degree between ethnic identity/ Chinese nation identity and national identity of majorities undergraduates is higher than the peers.Finally,every universities need to form normal system about national unity progress education to guide college students to correctly understand the relationship between diversity and unity,to form diversity in unity-ethnic view of the nation,to establish a blended campus environment,and to promote interaction among undergraduates of all ethnics.This study enriched research content about diversity in unity of Chinese nation,and deepened understanding for the pattern of diversity in unity of Chinese nation,which was valuable in theory development.For practice,this study described the status quo of undergraduates' identity for diversity in unity of Chinese nation.Its result and suggestion provided empirical support for universities to construct students' Chinese nation community awareness.
