Cross-strait relations have gone through60years of ups and downs. Since the beginning of the21st century, especially since2008, the cross-strait relations reached an unprecedented height. Exchanges of Political, economic, social, and cultural have become increasingly frequent. Peaceful development and win-win situation have become the characteristics of the new era of cross-strait relations.Throughout the development of cross-strait relations, it is not difficult to find that the recognition of the Chinese nation has always been an important factor to affect cross-strait relations. The Chinese nation identity is the basis of peaceful reunification. However, in recent years, the separatists who orchestrate elaborately and advocate shrilly on the island help the rapid development of the "Taiwan independence" forces and the spread of the "Taiwan independence" ideology. All of these are very uncoordinated considering the development trend of cross-strait relations in more than half a century. In the1990s the Taiwan authorities stuck to the line of "Taiwan independence" by siding ever closer to formal independence from China. It is an important way for the authorities to deny the national identity of the Chinese nation, negate all ethnic groups in Taiwan which is an integral part of the Chinese nation and modern Chinese history. This paper intends to hackle the basic concepts of the Chinese nation identity, using historical analysis to retrospect the development process of the Chinese nation identity on the mainland and Taiwan respectively, and inspecting their long history and profound culture and the same strain of the Chinese nation identity. The purpose is to refute the so-called "Taiwan independence consciousness". In addition, this paper also use the literature analysis to study the Chinese nation identity in the policies of both mainland China and Taiwan, and then find a Correlation between National identity factor and Cross-strait policy. By the analysis of the influence of national identity on Cross-strait relations, we can firmly grasping the orientation of Cross-strait relations. In practice, the current Cross-straits relations are the best situation in60years:Politically, the Kuomintang (KMT) and the Communist Party of China (CPC) have established a regular communication platform; Economically, the total trade between both sides of the Taiwan Straits in recent years increases by a large margin; personnel visits and social exchanges also reached an unprecedented scale. Therefore, the study of the Chinese nation identity and the Cross-strait relations is a great significance, both in theoretical and practical. The result indicates that Chinese nation identity is the basis of the development of Cross-strait relations and plays a fundamental role in guiding the policies of both sides of the Taiwan Straits. Peace and Development are the two major themes for the present time, if both sides identify with the Chinese nation, the relations will have a greater development, if not, it will stop advancing. This is particularly evident in "Mainland Policy" since Lee Teng-hui has been in power in Taiwan. Secondly, the Chinese nation identity is an important weapon to curb "Taiwan independence" forces on the island. The Chinese nation identity can help us tell the "Taiwan consciousness" from the "Taiwan independence consciousness" and firmly resist corruption by "Taiwan independence consciousness". Finally, both the mainland and Taiwan have their own interpretations about "one-China principle", it is easier for both sides to reach a consensus on the Chinese nation identity. Economic and cultural exchanges across the Taiwan Straits can intensify the Chinese nation identity and realize complete unification of the motherland.
