The foreign aid policies of France to Africa have experienced a procedure of constant development and transformation.After the Second World War,African countries have launched national independence movements and have got rid of the shackles of former colonial powers,such as France.France,suffered a major blow during the war,and its first priority was to continue to maintain relations with the former colonies in order to restore its great-power status.Therefore,each government of France has put the Franco-African relationship,especially the relationship with french-speaking African countries,on a high priority.And the foreign aid is considered as one of the most important ways.In recent years,African countries have enjoyed political stability and rapid economic growth,and Africa has become the focus of competition among great powers.Confronted with the fierce competition in Africa,France has accelerated its adjustment of aid policies to Africa to maintain its traditional dominance,and there are still numerous challenges and obstacles which merit a closer look and in-depth study.At the same time,China-Africa relations have become an important part of China's diplomatic strategy.Relations between China and Africa have warmed up in recent years.Understanding the development of France's aid policies towards Africa is of great significance for developing China-Africa relations.This thesis is divided into five parts.The introduction consists of the purpose and significance of the research,literature review,methodology,innovations and difficulties.The first chapter teases out the development of France's aid policies to Africa before the cold war,and summarizes the characteristics in evolution of the four governments as Charles de Gaulle,Pompidou,Destan and Mitterrand.The second chapter is the key chapter of the full thesis,which analyzes the reasons,contents and influences of theadjustments of France's aid policies to Africa after the Cold War.The third chapter demonstrates the unique characteristics of the aid policy adjustments based on the first two chapters with concrete examples.The final chapter analyzes the challenges France was confronted with in order to put forward some suggestions and predicts the future direction of Franco-African relations,finally it provides the enlightenment and constructive suggestions on the development of Chinese foreign aid to Africa.
