59 five-six-year old kindergarten children were quasi-randomly assigned into an intervened group or a control group in order to evaluate the aftermath effect of the Graphical Diary Retelling Activity on their narrative ability.During the experiment, the intervened children(n=29)were asked to draw a graphical diary on a notebook in their daily basis and re-tell the diary to their parents after school;while the control group(n=30)remained their routine activities without this particular intervention. The narrative ability of children in both groups were assessed before and after the 8 weeks intervention. The measurement consisted of eight sub-dimensions including narrative structure, theme appropriate, use of narrative mood, use of time markers, use of dialogue, expressiveness, vocabulary level and sentence structure. Results revealed, despite of the lack of differences in the pre-assessments,the intervened children significantly outperformed the control children in the post-assessments on narrative structure, theme appropriate.use of narrative mood, use of time markers, use of dialogue, vocabulary level and sentence structure except expressiveness. The Graphical Diary Retelling Activity can facilitate five-six-year old kindergarten children’s narrative ability. This study provides a new method to improve the narrative ability of kindergarten children in K3 class, which can help kindergarten teachers to carry out narrative ability teaching activities.
