As an key discipline set up in junior middle school, science found itself short of a core concept to acquire and summarize its knowledge that is somewhat easy, lack of underlying logic and whose contents and systems contain a mess of topics as well.To arrange its core concepts in sensible order and pave its way to probe further, the thesis fosters a new concept that is,Learning Progression(LP)and thereafter focuses on its theoretical significance and its application to teaching. As an essential topic electromagnetism in junior science curriculum, electromagnetism involves a cluster of related core concepts such like electric charges, electric circuits and etc,all of which substitute the difficult points in learning. It is common that students are unable to form a comprehensive system because of the ness of its concepts as well as its unfamiliarity to them. There exits two essential problems accounting for explanation and exploitation in follows:1.Ensure the connotation of LP on electromagnetism learning in the background of compulsory education as well as its extension.2.Study its application to the teaching practice and its effectiveness. As for the first target,it is necessary to establish a system of LP consisted of an assortment of core concepts involving electromagnetism by the means of defining its concepts and its related knowledge category in reading textbooks and curriculum standards and searching for various document literature. As for the second target,a case study would be conducted in follows:A group of 150 middle students selected from four classes, chosen as study objects, are pretested to ensure their staring point of LP with a test paper adopted from those entitled electromagnetism in elementary school stage.Half of them allocated into two advanced classes,as a experimental group, are instilled purposely into LP concepts to help them apply and associate the learned knowledge after and before while the rest of students,as a control group,is conducted and taught in routine. Then, all of students are tested regularly after each class as well as the finish of each unit to check out whether they master the teaching objectives and to what extent they have achieved. Finally,by comparing with previous statics of LP starting point,LP's applicability and its effectiveness in teaching deserves a compressive and scientific analysis. The results of this case study are in follows:1.The lack of coherence of LP system in practice is accounted for the shortage of matching system of related concepts in science of junior stage,in contrast to the elementary stage where the LP teaching has entered into the new edition of curriculum standards.2.The learning level in science from most of pupils fail to achieve the LP's baseline level required of the junior-compiled science textbooks and there exists a huge gap of competence in science with respect to students3.The classroom test results reveal that the utilization of LP in class takes little effect to conduct students to master the teaching goals that is,the target point of LP.4.Given the results of unit tests, the LP learning guarantees a certain measure of promotion in scores of the top and poor students but not for those of the average studentsThe advantages based on the LP system is in follows:1.conduct the class teaching from the perspective of concept progression.2.study the teaching evaluation from the perspective of mastering level of students.3.implement the personalized tutoring from the perspective of achievement level. The shortage of its application is in follows:1.there seemingly exists no available teaching and evaluation model to refer to since its further study is in urgent need at present.2.A complete set of applicable testing tool has still been wanting in practice whose usage would have been required of the LP theory to keep consistent before and after the testing course over all grades.
