With the promotion of China government,Mandarin is rapidly heating up,setting off a wave of "Mandarin fever" in the whole world.As an important part of TCSL,Chinese characters have become a dilemma for many learners.By collecting the errors made by the students of Chinese immersion program in Hosford Middle School,this paper divides these errors into three groups:stroke errors,component errors and whole character errors.Stroke errors include stroke deformation errors,relations between strokes errors and numbers of strokes errors.Component errors include deformation and displacement of component errors,exchange of component errors,increasing and decreasing of component errors and structural dispersion errors.The whole character errors include complex form and simplified form errors,wrongly written character errors.Based on these errors,this paper aims to find the causes,there are reasons from students' aspects,including negative transfer of first language,weak learning motivation and unscientific learning strategies.And there are reasons from teachers' aspects too,such as lacking of various methods of teaching Chinese characters,ignoring the importance of Chinese characters,and insufficient teacher resources etc.Besides,the complicacy of Chinese characters itself also makes it harder for students to learn.Therefore,this paper puts forward some suggestions from these aspects,hoping it would make some difference on improving Chinese characters acquirement.
