The Belt and Road Initiative(BRI),also known as the Silk Road Economic Belt and 21st-Century Maritime Silk Road, has become the keyword in Chinese diplomacy since Xi Jinping put forward in 2013.As an important country in the Asia-Pacific region,Australia maintains close trade relations with China, and the development of its Northern Territory is highly compatible with the content of BRI.However, the Australian federal government has been vacillating and BRI is still controversial in Australian society. The smooth development of BRI cannot be separated from the recognition and acceptance of the international community. Therefore,it is worthwhile to find how do Australians regard BRI,and how the Australian mainstream media reports BRI.Data sample includes news reports of BRI,from The Australian,The Sydney Morning Herald,The Age and Herald Sun,which are representative of credibility and influence, from January 1st,2018 to December 31st,2018.From the perspective of news selection and news construction, this thesis is going to represent the overall situation of BRI reports in Australian mainstream newspapers, through the content and text analysis.Meanwhile, this thesis is aimed to identify Australia's perceptions and attitudes towards BRI and explore the relevant communication regularity. The analysis finds that focused on their own country,Australian mainstream newspapers also selected the news related to the neighboring countries which cooperate with China on BRI.In addition, they used the exact quote official sources to increase the authority and credibility of the report. As for the themes associated with BRI,Australian mainstream newspapers emphasis both political and economic themes, but lack social and cultural themes, which reflects the imbalanced reports. In terms of news construction, the number of reports is related to the intensity of BRI diplomatic and economic activities, and increases the number of reports on key issue. What's more, the length and genre of the reports are mainly short news coverage and comments, but lack of in-depth and comprehensive reports. In terms of the overall tone covering the BRI,most reports are neutral, however, there are more negative reports than positive ones, and the tone among different themes and regions are slightly different, reflecting the Australian media emphasis on Australia's core interests.Based on the analysis of the media frame, this paper summarizes the three news frame characters in the mainstream Australian mainstream newspapers, which includes“challenge and opportunity”,“prosperity and dilemma”,and“cooperation and competition”.Then from the perspective of Australia's national strategy, social atmosphere and media culture, this paper also explains the reasons for the formation of such media frames.Overall,it can be seen that Australia still has doubts and concerns about the political and strategical purposes or risk of BRI,but it cannot be indifferent to the economic benefits, leading to the fear and greed attitude of China. In the last part, this thesis puts forward suggestions for the international communication of BRI:insisting on correct public opinion orientation, enriching the content and methods of communication, and shaping the concept of to improve the effectiveness and pertinence of communicationAt the end of the thesis, from the perspective of improving the effectiveness and pertinence of communication,it puts forward three suggestions for the international communication of“the Belt and Road Initiative”in China, that is,insisting on correct public opinion orientation, enriching the content and methods of communication, and building a community of common destiny for all mankind.
