Electrochromic materials are a kind of functional materials,which have broad applications in the information storage,glare-free mirror,smart window and other fields.Electrochromism can be defined as the change of color resulting from electrochemical oxidation or reduction.Organic-electrochromic materials have been the focus in the yield of electrochromism for many advantages,which including short switching time,multicolor capability,easy to design,synthesize,and so on.In this study,we design a series of polyimides(PIs)and polyaimides(PAs)with electrochromic properties.There are 12 species for polyimides and 10 species for polyamides.Some polyimides have electrical memory characteristics.Triphenylamine(TPA)and its derivatives group,which have good ability of hole-transport,can be used as electron-donor blocks.Furthermore,they have excellent performance of electrochromic.So,the highly electron-rich TPA derivatives have been chosen as important candidates for electrical and optical applications,electroluminescence and electrochromic devices.In this study,all polymers were characterized by FT-IR spectroscopy,1HMR,thermogravimetric analysis,SEM,X-ray diffraction patterns and inherent viscosities.The new polymer materials were coated on the ITO conductive glass to be tested their electrochromic properties by cyclic volammetry(CV)measurement and UV-vis spectra.The results showed that aromatic PIs and PAs are well accepted as high performance polymers because of their good thermal and chemical stability,excellent mechanical properties,and high glass transition temperatures,and the electrochromic color of polymers have a significant difference before and after charging.The color of PIs changed from red to blue or yellow to black,and the color of PAs changed from red to black or brown to black.It’s found that the colors of the materials changed with the voltage being changed.The films indicated a good reversibility.The change trend of energy which was calculated through quntum chemistry simulation basically is corresponding to the result of the experimental trend.With these features,the polyimides and polyamides designed in this paper can be used as electrochromic materials.
