This Master' s Thesis is based on Gough Island, using maps, original archives and other relevant literature to discuss the changes of the Huangpu River's waterway, and analyzing the influence of the change of waterway on Shanghai Port. This Master' s Thesis mainly focuses on the following issues:The first is the exploration of the recovery process of Gaoqiaosha, starting from the perspective of maps and time, demonstrating the emergence and growth of Gaoqiaosha in the middle and early stages. The second is the Gough Island governance plan and attitudes of all parties at the end of the 19th century.Starting from the archives and data, analyzing the advantages and disadvantages of the dredging program, the attitude of Chinese and foreign officials and businessmen was analyzed. The third is the Gough Island shore-to-shore process.Through the reduction of the dredging project implementation and the use of the land in the later phase, the impact of the Gough Island shoreline is demonstrated.Through these three questions, this Master's Thesis can discuss the development of the port.In the lower reaches of the Huangpu River,Middle Ground appeared near the Woosung Creek. It has grown rapidly and poses a great threat to ships entering and leaving Shanghai.Gough Island is the largest in the Huangpu River. The Gough Island is located at the mouth of the Huangpu River. The position of the Gough Island is crucial. After the appearance of the inner bar,the Huangpu River is divided into two fairways. The right bank of Pudong has a deeper river and can pass through big rounds. However, the river is relatively narrow and accidents occur frequently;the left bank of Puxi is relatively river water.Shallow, can only navigate China's small flat-bottomed boats. How to deal with the issue of Gough Island has become an important issue for both Chinese and foreign parties since Shanghai opened its doors.Due to the growth of Inner Bar,from the end of the 19th century to the first decade of the 20th century,a series of diplomatic struggles were carried out around the dredging of the Huangpu River, although both parties have done a lot of dredging work in practical work, but due to the lack of Uniform planning and limited dredging are important reasons for the continued growth of Gough Island in the late 19th century. In 1906,the Chinese and foreign parties reached a basic agreement to start a major transformation of the Shanghai waterway. After this major transformation,a relatively stable navigation channel was built, which laid the foundation for Shanghai's economic prosperity in the 1920s and 1930s.Thanks to continuous advancement in the areas of port construction and dredging, the shift in the location of Shanghai Port has undergone a corresponding shift, showing distinctive features of advancing with the times and gradually shifting towards the lower reaches of the Huangpu River.
