Purpose:To observe the clinical efficacy of the eye-acupuncture combined with body-acupuncture and the body-only acupuncture therapy on the treatment of insomnia secondary to heart and spleen deficiency and to compare the difference in efficacy between these two methods in the treatment of insomnia secondary to heart and spleen deficiency.Materials and methods:Sixty patients with insomnia secondary to heart and spleen deficiency were selected from the acupuncture and moxibustion clinic at the Affiliated Hospital of Liaoning University of Traditional Chinese Medicine.Patients were randomized and divided into two groups(eye-acupuncture combined with body-acupuncture and body-only acupuncture therapy),with 30 patients in each group.Treatment took place once a day, with acupuncture 5 days a week followed by a break for 2 days. This continued for 3weeks,resulting in a treatment duration of 15 days. The scores of all 2 groups on the Pittsburgh sleep quality index(PSQI),the insomnia secondary to heart and spleen deficiency Traditional Chinese Medicine score pre-and post-treatment were analysed using statistical packages.Results:1.There is a statistically significant difference(P<0.05)between the pre-and post-treatment scores on the PSQI score for both the eye-acupuncture combined with body-acupuncture group and the body-only acupuncture therapy group.2.There is a statistically significant difference(P<0.05)between the pre-and post-treatment scores on the insomnia secondary to heart and spleen deficiency Traditional Chinese Medicine score for both the eye-acupuncture combined with body-acupuncture group and the body-only acupuncture therapy group.3.In the comparison of the PSQI scores post-treatment,there is a significant difference between the combined-acupuncture therapy group and the body-only acupuncture therapy group(P<0.05).4.In the comparison of the insomnia secondary to heart and spleen deficiency Traditional Chinese Medicine score post-treatment,there was no significant difference between thecombined-acupuncture group and the body-only acupuncture therapy group(P>0.05).Conclusion:1.The eye-acupuncture combined with body-acupuncture and the body-only acupuncture therapy are both efficacious in reducing the disease severity of patients with insomnia secondary to heart and spleen deficiency.2.The efficacy of combined-acupuncture therapy targeting both the eyes and the body is superior to body-only acupuncture therapy.3.Therapy involving eye-acupuncture combined with body-acupuncture improves the quality of life in patients with insomnia secondary to heart and spleen deficiency and therefore is a promising technique that warrants further investigation and promotion in clinical practice.
