Background:Gastroesophageal reflux disease(GERD)is a common upper gastroint-estinal disease and irritable bowel syndrome(IBS)is a common lower gastrointestinal disorder. The epidemiology shows that the the prevalence of overlapping gastroesophag-eal reflux disorder(GERD)and irritable bowel syndrome(IBS)is very high, and the patients with GERD often have alternating symptoms of IBS-like diarrhea and constip-ation,and the extraintestinal manifestations of many IBS patients are typical GERD s-ymptoms.The two disorders are closely related and often occur with each other.Howe-ver,the pathogenesis of the diseases have not been fully elucidated.Western medicine believes that the occurrence of the two diseases may be related to the common risk f-actors and the same pathophysiological changes. There are few studies on GERD overl-apping IBS in traditional Chinese medicine, most of which are at the level of etiology andpathogenesis, and most of them are independent studies of two diseases.Further st-udies,including syndromes and treatments are lacking. Objective:This research concentrated on summarizing and analyzing the TCM Sy-ndrome typing of GERD overlapping IBS under the guidance of traditional Chinese m edicine theory, summing up the proportion of each syndrome type, and exploring the r elationships between the disease and the following factors, such as gender,age,educati-onal level, occupation, marriage,BMI,psychological status,psycho-psychological press-ure,history of alcohol intake and history of smoking,The research was to provide n-ew ideas and basis for prevention and treatment, and reduces the consumption of unn-ecessary medical resources and expenses. Methods:According to the inclusion criteria and exclusion criteria,94 patients wit-h GERD overlapping IBS,40 patients with IBS alone and 44 patients with GERD alo-ne were enrolled.General epidemiological datas were collected, including name, gender, age, height, weight, educational level, occupation, psychological status, diet habits,sle-ep,and other general conditions.Surveying the patients by IBS symptom severity sca-le(IBS-SSS),Gastroesophageal reflux disease questionnaire(GerdQ),Hospital anxiety an-d depression scale(HAD)and TCM Syndrome classification scale.Results:1.Compared with the simple IBS group and the simple GERD group respectively,t here were no significant differences in sex, age, the level of education, occupation, marriag e,dietary habits, sleep status, exercise status, the history of smoking, the history of alcohol intake and psychological stress between GERD overlapping IBS group. And there was no correlation between the above factors and the occurrence of overlapping.2.Compared with the IBS group, overlapping GERD and IBS group showed that BMI was the risk factor of the overlapping group. The higher the BMI,the more likely GERD overlapping IBS would occur.Compared with the GERD group,BMI was not a relevant factor for the overlap. The higher the BMI,the more likely the IBS patien-ts suffer from GERD.Obese IBS patients should control their weight and ensure a he-althy lifestyle to prevent GERD.3.Compared with the simple IBS group and the simple GERD group, anxiety and depression were more serious in the overlapping GERD and IBS group, but there was no correlation with the occurrence of overlap. The tension in the overlapping group w-as different from that in the IBS group and the GERD group respectively, but there w-as no correlation withthe occurrence of GERD overlapping IBS.There was no differen-ce in impatience and irritability between the overlapping group, the IBS group and the GERD group, and there was no correlation with the occurrence of overlap.4.There was no significant difference in the severity of irritable bowel syndrome between overlapping group and those with IBS alone.5.Among the 94 patients with overlapping GERD and IBS,62 patients with IBS-D had the highest proportion, accounting for 65.96%.7patients with IBS-C,accountin-g for 7.45%.7 patients with IBS-M,accounting for7.45%.There were 18 patients with IBS-U,accounting for 19.15%.6.Among all of the 94 patients with GERD overlapping IBS,69 cases wereof liver depression and spleen deficiency syndrome, accounting for 73.40%,is the highest prop-ortion of all syndrome types.12 cases liver qi stagnation syndrome, accounting for 12.77%.There are 5 cases of spleen andstomach damp-heat syndrome, accountingfor 5.32%.There were 4 cases of mixed cold and heat syndrome and 4 cases of spleen deficien-cy and dampness syndrome, accounting for 4.26%respectively.
