Research On Suffix Word Modules In Modern Chinese

Suffix word-mold in modern Chinese refers to a word structure that consisted of mold-marker,which usually is a fixed morpheme,and a mold-slot,which is preposed of the mold-marker,with a replaceable morpheme.This thesis takes X-Ge(X is the word or phrase in the mold-slot and Ge means elder brother in Chinese as the mold-marker)as an example to analyze,on the basis of researches on other productive word-molds,the main features in suffix word-mold in modern Chinese and the cognitive motivation in its formation.On the very beginning of this paper,it pays first concern to the structure peculiarity of Chinese word-mold.Firstly,on the lexical aspect,nominal words and phrases are ascendant part of speech in the word-mold in forming a modifier and head structure.Secondarily,mold-marker has a typical semantic feature of[+human],while the mold-slot displays a regular meaning in some of the sememe with a superiority of substantive morpheme,the combing of the standard and slot shows a strong tendency of meaning emerging,in other word,the meaning becomes more apparent after this operation.Thirdly,pragmatically speaking,most of the instances discussed in the paper have grammatical functions.Most of the molds were stored in language speaker's mind as a specific structure operating with an online pattern in producing and understanding while the rest of them,quite a few parts,are memorized as a word in mental lexicon under a high using frequency.In its phonology,the two-syllable instances tend to develop to a fixed vocabulary in the mental lexicon,meanwhile the third-syllable instances tend to develop to a temporary vocabulary on the basis of lexical structures.Then we take X-Ge as an sample to analyze the cognitive motivation of suffix word-mold deriving from the view of construction grammar.Working on a lexical level,it is a construction with two substances,while the first has an empty slot named schematic construction;the other is called a substantive construction.The typical structure is made of noun phrases.The solidification of a construction indicates the token frequency enhance the lexical strength of substantive construction,in the meantime the type frequency promotes the categorization of this schematic construction.On the aspect of construction coercion,the construal of NP type requires cognitive metonymy which deeply rooted on the prominence of object and the subject's attention.In the view of construction inheritance,the multi-inheritance mode of the construction X-Ge implies five major types of its inheritance motivation,including the lexical mode of conventional X-Ge,Chinese compound word,the Indo-European derivation,the new words in Chinese as well as a new usage of Ge.In the end,the paper briefly states the forming reasons of suffix-word-mold,with several respects of following factors such as the Europeanize of coinage in Chinese,individual imitation behaviors,group's unconscious behaviors,media's direction and a loose and comfortable cultural environment in modern society.These characteristics thrill the emergency and development of the word-mold.
