In 2014,the Nanjing University Press commissioned me to translate Maurice Blanchot novel The Most High.Maurice Blanchot(1907-2003)was a French writer, literary theorist, and philosopher,he has devoted his whole life to the literature. His work has greatly influenced other thinkers like Deleuze,Foucault,Levinas,Sartre.Until today,it still inspires the literature researchers all over the world.Despite its far-reaching,his work is not easy to read.Blanchot was even considered as one of the most enigmatic French writers of the 20th century. In order to apply his literature and language theory into practice,Blanchot also engaged in writing fiction.Came out in 1948,The Most High was his last novel, the style of which is more close to the traditional novels compared with the writer's other work. However, the novel still bears his distinct literary style of fragmented plot and unfathomable language. For this reason, the translator has encountered many difficulties in the step of understanding this novel. In order to increase the translation quality,I began to examine the difficulties of translation, and I've realized that the origins of these difficulties were mainly concentrated in three areas:the structure of novel The Most High,Blanchot's language style, and Blanchot's literature view.In accordance with the concept of Blanchot, words are not meant to convey messages or to refer to objects in real life, they are an absolute existence.Given the fact that the texte has "the tenacious independence",to decode or to analyse it is already the betrayal to the author in a sense.Blanchot's literature concept is one of the major obstacles of the translation work.Since to Blanchot's mind, literature refuses, essentially,to be understood. The translator was then caught in a dilemma.Faced with these difficulties of translation,I recalled and evaluated my concept of translation and my translation methods. In this process,I gradually realized that,in addition to looking for the translation method in the technical level, the reflection on the ethical level was also indispensable for the formation of correct translation concept and the completion of translation tasks. This thesis is a summing-up report of the translation of the novel The Most High,it consists of three parts:introduction, body and conclusion. The introduction part gives an overview about the translation task and process. The body part is divided into three chapters. The first chapter discusses the difficulties the translator has encountered in translating The Most High, and the reasons are as follows:firstly the structure of modern fiction;secondly Blanchot's personal style in the choice of words and building of sentences;lastly Blanchot's literature view. The second chapter sums up the theoretical thinking the translator has attempted in order to over those difficulties.Firstly at the macro level the translator makes a re-understanding of "faithfulness" with the help of former studies and adjusts her strategy;secondly examines the theory of the subjectivity of the translator and come to the realization of the possibility and significance of putting to good use of this subjectivity,as well as what its space is.At the micro level, the translator examines the poetics theory to investigate how to keep the meaning, texture and rhythm of the language and reflects upon its guiding significance to the translation practice. The third chapter mainly focuses on case study on the basis of the two previous chapters to demonstrate how the translator addresses specific translation problems under the guidance of the macro and micro theories, and summarizes the strategies and methods to keep the meaning, texture and rhythm of the language on the basis of her own translation practice.Through the analysis and discussion in the body paragraphs, this thesis comes to the following conclusions:firstly, the formation of correct translation concept has a significant importance in translation activities;secondly, translation is not only a switch of languages, but also involves the representation of the author's literary world, and the communication between different cultures, thus to understand the studies on the author as well as his works can greatly facilitate the translation process;besides, the translational poetic theories provide a reference method for the reproduction of style in literary translationlast;last but not least, practice is always the best way to learn about translation, without which the understanding of theory will be merely superficial.Only by persistent practice and thinking under the guide of theory, can we make continuous improvement on the path of translation.
