Affected by the domestic situation of foreign language learning, middle school students lack sufficient input of English language.Although extensive reading is one of the important ways to increase language input to improve their reading abilities. The teaching methods and researches about extensive reading are comparatively less available, let alone the effective teaching approaches.Although the popular task-based reading approach proclaims that students are actively involved in the tasks through the learner-centered teaching process in which much attention is paid to the collaborative learning, the defects of the teaching approach have been exposed in the teaching practice.Besides, there is a tendency that more attention is paid to the form of classroom activities while the meaning of a task is neglected. In order to create a situation close to a real or possible world making the students furthest devoted to the situation constructed through narration and explore an effective way to teach extensive reading in the aforementioned situation and world in which individuals' mental abilities like language, emotion, language and creativity can be well developed. This study picked two classes in Junior One from a foreign language school. They were treated as an experimental class and a control class respectively.Good English 6 was selected as the reading material for the extensive reading.Narrative approach was adopted in the experimental class while the same reading material was taught in a traditional way in the control class. An 18-week action research including 3 phases was planned and carried out through the process. The data of the tests was collected and analyzed by T-test of SPSS 16.0.The results show that the scores of students in the experimental class are much higher than those of the control class, and the new teaching approach is far better than the traditional one,for the students' reading abilities have been greatly improved. This research is attached to the goal:to adopt the narrative approach in the extensive reading in junior high schools to create a more realistic simulated mood rather than a fake interactive situation;to develop their more extensive cognitive abilities accompanied byelevated reading abilities;to search for more effective ways of narrative activities and improve the efficiency of independent study and collaborative study.
