The development of wood carving is inseparable from the great artistic environment.In the development of society,technology and humanities,art schools are also constantly bringing forth new ideas.Imitation theory has always been one of the representative viewpoints of the origin of art,but with the emergence of various doctrines,especially the rise of modern art,artistic creation not only aims at imitating reality.Instead,more and more attention is paid to the "performance" in the works of art,and the artists are gradually putting their subjective sensuality into their own works of art.With the excavation and exploration of modern language by artists,various forms of portraits of wood carvings appear in the public views;especially the famous Japanese woodcarving artist Katsura Funakoshi's works received extensive attention.The article is mainly through the carding of modern portrait wood carvings,analysis,and then combined with the case analysis of the works of Katsura Funakoshi,to find out the characteristics of modern portrait sculpture.Such as the cognitive characteristics of wood,the expression of texture color,The subjective expression of the formal language and the emotional attachment in the artist's creation.Through the analysis of Zhou Yuegui's works,this paper attempts to reveal the "performance" in the creation of modern portraits of wood carvings,so as to explain his own understanding of modern woodcarving creation and to provide more new possibilities for future creation.
