Exploring The Translation Under The Guidance Of Skopostheory: A Report On Translation Practice Of "Duncan's Autobiography" (excerpt)

The report is a reflection on the adaptation practice of My Life(2014),autobiography of Isodora Duncan,which was translated by Zhang Mingbin,one of the author's MTI teachers.Permitted by Professor Zhang,the author chose three chapters to be retranslated under the guidance of Skopos Theory.There are five chapters in this report.Chapter One is Task Description,providing the relevant background information and the task requirements.Chapter Two describes the translation process and they are preparation,difficulties during the adaptation,proofreading and assessment.Chapter Three introduces Skopos Theory and its three principles.The features of autobiography and the maneuverability of translation are taken into consideration when the author applied the concerned theory into her adaptation.Chapter Four is translation comparison and case analysis,in which the two different versions are carefully compared and analyzed from respects of understanding and strategies.As far as the adaptation strategies are concerned,the employed translation skills,such as Conversion,Amplification,and Repetition are received due attention and careful analysis.It can be safely stated that Skopos Theory is very applicable and guidable for both translating and adaptating such kind of text as My Life.In the last chapter values as well as limitations of this adaptation practice are concluded with the hope of providing possible help for the similar translation.
