| Since ancient times,the oxen and buffalos have been an animal totem,which were also one of the most important draught animals in the farming area.In the course of dealing with the relationship between man and animals,the belief in the Ox King took form,so as the texts of the Ox King which epitomize this belief.Although there are nowadays some studies on the belief in the Ox King in the academic circles,due to the scarcity of relevant documents kept in the libraries at home and abroad,most scholars were focusing on the study of the Ox King Festival,Ox King Assembly,the Celebration of the Ox King's birthday and even the worship of the Ox King from the perspectives of anthropology,folklore,and art,etc.However,there are no monographs or essays written based on a large number of the texts of the Ox King and with the methods of religious studies,especially religious philological methods.?The texts of the Ox King,which include scriptures,ritual texts,repentance texts and memorials is a basic reference with an important research value for us to understand the belief in the Ox King.This article,which consists of five chapters,is a study of more than thirty kinds of texts of the Ox King.The first chapter is the introduction and the fifth chapter is conclusion.The middle three chapters are the main part of this article.The second chapter introduces the basic situation of these texts of the Ox King in the form of cataloging.The third chapter focuses on the related records of cattle and the Ox King in the texts of the Ox King.The fourth chapter discusses the practical application and the rites of the texts of the Ox King from the perspective of the ritual text of the almsgiving to the monk. |
