Dong Qichang,as a renowned calligrapher and painter in the Ming Dynasty,has a far-reaching influence on his calligraphy style and calligraphic thought.Compared to the traditional calligraphers of the Ming Dynasty,Dong Qichang,with a keen sense of art,stuck to the banner of “retrospective change” to learn from the ancients,and developed new ideas and innovations.His simple and elegant style of art has been highly evaluated in later generations.The thought of “The theory of Southern and Northern Sects” of his literati painting has been greatly influenced and discussed.His profound calligraphy art thought has been greatly concerned by scholars of the later generations,and has become a powerful theoretical basis for guiding the practice of calligraphy.In Dong Qichang's preface and postscript,there are a large number of calligraphy theories and artistic aesthetic thoughts,which have very important theoretical values.This article starts with the content of Dong Qichang's preface and postscript,and strives to comprehensively analyze the calligraphic thoughts covered by Dong's inscriptions.The introduction of the article begins with the interpretation of the "preface and postscript" and interprets the occurrence,development,classification,and function of it.Besides,it explains the special significance of the content of Dong's preface and postscript on his book theory,and then makes a summary of his life,and the environment and state of mind at the time of writing.With the content of Dong's preface and postscript as the main basis,he constantly refines and summarizes the theoretical thoughts and artistic ideas contained in it.Finally,the significance of calligraphic thought in Dong Qichang's preface and postscript,the influence on scholars of later generations,and the reference and enlightenment of his calligraphic thought in his personal calligraphy creation practice are clarified,which can fully understand Dong's artistic aesthetic pursuit.
