Dong Qichang is a very influential artist with a high level of the practice of calligraphy and painting,who also had lots of knowledge of Zen method in late Ming dynasty.Then he immediately put his own understanding of practice experience and the theory and practice of painting and calligraphy into together and created a new situation of discussing painting on Zen method and maphorring Zen as calligraphy,which then created a new school on art and went down in history.As late Ming Dynasty was not only the era of great change in Zen,but also the era of deep integration of Zen and Buddhist,which brought important change on Zen.While predecessors in the study of Dong Qichang's Zen thought and the thought of maphorring Zen as calligraphy and other issues may neglect the influence of the change of Zen and the study of Zen and Buddhist on the view of Dong Qichang's calligraphy and the practice of calligraphy.Taking these as clues this essay explores the purpose and opportunity of Dong Qichang's Zen thought,his own understanding of practice experience,his act of maphorring Zen as calligraphy and the application of the understanding on his practice experience in the issues of the view of Dong Qichang's calligraphy and the practice of calligraphy,and tries to clearly restore the development and practice of Dong Qichang's Buddhist thought and the view of Dong Qichang's calligraphy.So as to further explain the significance of Zen's change and the prevalence of the study of Zen and Buddhist in the history of late Ming Dynasty calligraphy,and to take Wang Wenzhi as an example to explore the imitation and inheritance to the method of maphorring Zen as calligraphy in Qing Dynasty.
