An Experimental Phonetic Study Of Compound Vowels In Nanjing Dialect

This paper focuses on the research of the diphthongsin Nanjing dialect.The database includes single character and carrier wordsconditions.At the same time,the experimental analysis will be compared with Putonghua.The contents of the study are mainly divided into three chapters.Chapter 2 analyzes the rising diphthongs,and Chapter 3 studies the falling diphthongs.The triphthongs are discussed in Chapter 4.Comparing with monophthongs,the research of diphthongsin the dynamic and variant analysis isnot thorough.In the study of rising diphthongs in Chapter 1,We describes and compares the static and dynamic features of the diphthongs from duration,the changing rate of Formants,and endpointsdistributions.Furthermore,A diphthong isregarded as a single vowel,which is quantified and qualified fromthe quadratic equation of formants and the discrete cosine transform of the spectrum.That is the innovation of our work.The main results of the experiments are as followings:1)The results of duration analysis showed that:firstly,the rising diphthongs,which with the common characteristic of that transition is the main section,bothexist in Nanjing dialect and Putonghua.Secondly,under the condition of single characters,the IV and UV-type diphthongs of Nanjing dialect can be distinguished by the durationof the whole vowels,but it has no distinctive functions in Putonghua.Under the environment of carrier words,Nanjing dialect is consistent with Putonghua in that the duration of the whole vowels can be distinguished between IV and UV type,uV and yV type.Thirdly,In Nanjing dialect,the importance of the first component duration of the IV Type vowel in the single characters is greater thanin thecarriers.The UV style diphthongs are not like that.2)The analysis of the changing rate of formantsindicated that under the single charactercondiction,itplays the preliminary role in gender and the age classifications,whileonly has function on the age in the carrier words condition.3)The results ofendpoint distribution demonstrated that:the third component of the rising diphthongs[E]is similar to[?]in formants.According to the above experimental results,we draw the following experimental conclusions:1)Quadratic equation of formants and DCT have positive effects on the analysis of diphthongs.Among them,the quadratic equation of F2 and DCT0are distinctive parameters.2)The degree of sex variation is greater than the ages' in Nanjing dialect.3)The changing rate of F2 is directly related to the distance between the vowel components.4)In Nanjing dialect,[i?],[ie]should be classified as the same vowel,[(?)],[(?)]should be mergedas well.5)For the research of diphthongs,the acoustic characteristics can be observed more completely and objectively by the dynamic analysis which ison the basis of sectional analysis.
