| Visual word reading is a cognitive computing process from orthographic input to phonetic output,it involves mapping from orthography to phonology and mapping from orthography to phonology via semantic. The neural basis of orthography to phonology(O-P)processing is consistent in many studies of alphabetic languages. However, the neural basis of orthography to semantics(O-S)processing is highly confounded since the O-S mapping is arbitrary in alphabetic words. The logographic properties of the Chinese writing system provide an opportunity to directly examine the neural basis of O-S mapping processing but only a few neuroimaging studies in Chinese have addressed the neural basis of O-S processing. In the current study,we manipulate a behavioral experiment and an fMRI study to investigate the neural basis when process the semantic radicals and when the processing of semantic radical interacts with the meaning of whole character to demonstrate the neural basis of O-S processing.By manipulating the degree of meaning beside the form,we selected strong/weak two kinds of semantic levels and could not form words independently. Each of them was composed of two kinds of stimulating, materials, true and false words. We directly manipulated semantic radicals(strong vs.week)and words(real vs.false)factors to investigate this question.Behavioral experiments use vocabulary judgment tasks. The task of the participants is to judge whether the materials presented by the experiment are true or false. The results found a significant dictionary effect.Subjects responded faster than the false-word condition under real-word conditions. There was also a significant positive effect of shape-by-side semantics.Slower;but the interaction is not significant. The results show that both parametric and whole-word semantics are involved in reading and processing of Chinese characters.fMRI also uses a lexical task. The results show that the condition of the true word is greater than the condition of the false word and activates the semantically processed brain regions, including brain regions such as LMTG,LIFG and LATL;In the case of false characters, the weaker the semantic form is larger The activation of the LMTG brain region indicates that this brain region is related to the semantic processing next to the Chinese character;under the condition of true character, the strong literal meaning of the word activates the LIFG brain region more than the weak literal meaning. There are tangible side-by-side semantics, and the parametric semantics provide clues to the whole word semantics. Therefore, when the subjects read the strong semantic meanings of the table, they not only need to process the parametric semantics, but also activate the whole-word semantics. The semantics of the word are processed by the integration analysis. Therefore,we conclude that there is a pathway responsible for semantic processing, including the LIFG,and LMTG brain regions. The LMTG is responsible for semantic storage and access and LIFG is the brain of semantic integration processing.Taken together, our research discusses the neural basis when process the semantic radicals and when the processing of semantic radical interacts with the meaning of whole character to demonstrate the neural basis of O-S processing in behavioral and neural level. This study will make contribution to unify the neural physiological model. |
