Fluency of writing is an unconscious automatic program that is mainly embodied in the length of the article,the speed of writing,the quality of writing,and so on.Writing fluency is an important feature of language output,and it reflects the writer's ability to develop and organize ideas and to use language knowledge in a comprehensive way.Most of the previous studies are aimed at middle and high level second / foreign language learners and it is less concerned with low-level EFL learners,such as junior students.Moreover,the measurement indicator of writing fluency is single,which causes the results of the study to be one-sided in varying degrees.In addition,the genre of the composition is single.Most of them are in expository or argumentative texts.Research on the fluency of picture composition is rare.The present quantitative study is designed to investigate the validity of fluency measures in writing performance and the development trends of writing fluency across three grade levels.The study addresses two questions:1)What are the characters about the development trends of writing fluency across three grade levels in middle school?2)What is the relationship between fluency measures and the writing performance across three grade levels?This research adopts the quantitative analysis that is supplemented by qualitative analysis.124 students in Grade 7,8 and 9 of a general middle school in Dong Ying,Shandong Province,are selected by convenient sampling.The last remaining effective compositions are 100.The measurement indicators of writing fluency are 6 frequency and 6 ratio measurement indicators in Qin Xiaoqing,Bijin(2012).The 6 frequency measures of each composition are calculated respectively,and 6 ratio measures are calculated according to the logical relationship.The measurement of the quality of the picture compositions are scored by two scorers in accordance with the English composition score standard of the Jinan senior high school entrance examination in 2015.For the analysis of the indicators,the author uses the SPSS22.0 analysis software.It includes multiple comparative analyses,correlation analysis,multiple regression analysis,etc.The qualitative analysis is carried out on the specific examples of the compositions.In view of the first question proposed in this study,the findings are:Firstly,the development trends of fluency are linear and unbalanced of middle school students,especially the measures related to T-unit and clause.Secondly,the different fluency measures can produce different functions across three grade levels.The fluency measures related to clause can play a significant role in grade 8 and the fluency measures related to words can function well in grade 9.Thirdly,through the qualitative study,the writing fluency and the understanding of environment are linear increase,and it is more accurate.In view of the second question proposed in this study,the following research has been found : Firstly,the fluency shows rather strong positive correlations with the writing scores,however,the fluency measures related to words can function better than the fluency measures related to clause;Secondly,a predicting model of fluency measures is accomplished by multiple regression analysis.WEFT,W/EFT entered the model,and they can predict the variances in holistic scoring.This study is of implication.It is found that the three length ratios of T-unit length(W/T),error free T-unit length(W/EFT)and error free clause length(W/EFC)have different significant effects on writing quality of low level subjects.In combination with previous research results(Qin Xiaoqing,Bi Jin 2012),the results show that the three indicators have effects on the writing quality of low and high level subjects.In terms of theory,when studying low-level subjects' writing fluency,we should pay attention to the significant effect of the accuracy of T-unit length and sentence length on the quality of writing,and effectively use the length of indicators that involves accuracy.Secondly,basis on Dynamic System Theory,it is applicable to explore the development of junior students' writing fluency.In practice,for students,fluency indicator is used in writing,such as error free clause length,etc.,which provides a basis for students' self-feedback.In the study,it indicates we should pay attention to the accumulation of vocabulary and the output of the sentence without error.For teachers,writing fluency has a predictive effect on the quality of writing,so it becomes a guide to assess the writing proficiency and scientific criteria in writing assessment.
