Research On Aristotle's "Brave" Virtue

Wisdom,courage,justice and temperance were the four main virtues of Ancient Greece,of which courage was one of Aristotle’s most important virtues.As a great philosopher,scientist and educator in the ancient Greek period and a master of Greek philosophy,Aristotle’s courage virtue not only had an important influence on the moral ethics of Ancient Greek society,but also had a positive influence on the people’s courage personality shaping today.The virtue of courage was born in the special social environment of frequent wars in ancient Greece,relying on the natural geographical environment of small Greek countries and few people,and with the influence of religious factors,leading to the supreme social status of honor.The virtue of courage is characterized by nobility,voluntariness,rationality and moderation,and courage is a habitual action internalized in the heart.According to Aristotle’s description of courage virtue in the book Nicomachean Ethics,courage can be defined as a quality of voluntary noble choice in the sudden danger of dying and under the control of rational emotion.Socrates regarded temperance as the most important virtue,and Plato believed that a city-state of justice must be temperate,courageous and wise,while Aristotle regards courage as one of the most important virtues.It is found that the relationship between courage and other three main virtues is as follows: courage is wise,recklessness is unwise;courage has a justice purpose,without justice purpose is not courage;in the face of pain does not avoid is courage,in the face of happiness is not intemperate is temperance.Although the virtue of courage is the baby of a war society,the age of peace still needs to be courage today.Courage as a moral virtue,excessive and less will destroy this virtue,so that it becomes recklessness or cowardice,only moderate behavior is correct.This requires avoiding cowardice,avoiding self-preference,and being wary of things that are particularly enjoyable,taking courage as a habit and acting for a long time in the development of courage virtue.Today we study Aristotle’s courage virtue,to carry out critical inheritance.First of all,there are limitations in the scope of Aristotle’s courage virtue,and secondly,its courage virtue exists abstractly.But the concept of courage has given the present people the power to actively fight and face difficulties,which should be widely advocated,and it still has important enlightenment to us in contemporary society.Aristotle’s courage virtue to our contemporary enlightenment is embodied in: first,enlighten us to strengthen their courage character,to be a person who is not afraid of difficulties,dare to sacrifice;second,enlighten us to take the responsibility of defend,to be a responsible person to carry the shoulder of the people;and third,to enlighten us vigorously promote the virtues of courage,cultivate hard-working and courage Chinese.
