The Reluctant Fundamentalist is the second novel written by Pakistan British writer Mohsin Hamid. This novel has caused a great sensation and become a million-volume bestseller since it was published.Based on the theory of “the Other” in post-colonialism put forward by Edward Said, this thesis analyzes the process of Changez's identity pursuit, identity crisis and identity reconstruction in The Reluctant Fundamentalist. The main part of this paper is divided into three chapters. The first chapter discusses Changez's pursuit of American identity from the aspects of Study,Career and Love. The second chapter mainly explores the causes of identity crisis of “the Other” from Changez Individual to the Muslim Community. The third chapter expounds the reconstruction process of Changez's “the Other” identity from two aspects: the Reflection and Construction of Self-Identity,the Soul-searching Journey of “the Other” Identity. The last part is the conclusion of this thesis, through the summary of the three chapters, the following conclusions are drawn: the fundamental reason why Changez failed to pursuit American identity is the rejection of American mainstream society to “the Other” identity;Changez recognized his own identity as “the Other” after the failure of identity pursuing, then he returned to his hometown and the Muslim Community and found his own roots, resolutely;Hamid conveys to the world the best wishes of peaceful coexistence with “the Other” and the acceptance of “the Other” through the study of “the Other” identity.
