Zhou Dunyi was revered as the “suzerain of the Tao's state”,his theories on noumenon, effort and taste made a profound influence to the succedent Confucian moralists. On the one hand,Zhou Dunyi was the direct successor of Iching and Mencius,on the other hand,he was also affected by Buddhism and Taoism.“Static and dynamic, yin and yang“and “direct movement and void quietness”were the heart of his theories of effort from Taiji diagram and The book of reading Iching.Just like a spirit reform,Zhou Dunyi used “non-appetency” to replace “little appetency”,though his works failed to achieve the outer kingship,we could still find Zhou's vigilance against the evil ideas.I thought that it has became a pressing question in modern China:how to reconstruct or whether the reconstructing was possible.Firstly,To be specific,he rebuilt the Tao from the heaven and heart, expanded the universality of the Tao in individual life, and thus established the sanctity of Confucian personality. The effort theory is an important aspect of distinguishes it from the previous academic.Zhou Dunyi not only inherited the thinking orientation and life attitude of Confucianism in the pre-qin dynasty, but also was deeply inspired by the Buddhism mentality and the related effort theory. The Tao of heaven also becomes the direction.Secondly, from the structure of his thought, zhou Dunyi believed that the more important significance of yin-yang and the five elements is to highlight the ontological nature of all things. After the reality is properly arranged along the evolution of heaven and earth,Zhou Dunyi instead finds a way for everyone to have the ontological nature from the perspective of reality.Through the explanation of Yin and Yang and the five elements and the transformation of all things in reality,it reveals the necessity of achieving the personality of sages through time.Thirdly, from the perspective of content,Zhou Dunyi took “Taiji” as “sincerity”and emphasized truth, which was further carried forward by subsequentneo-confucianists.Although it inherited the basic principles of sanctity in pre-qin Confucianism,it still made improvements and reforms in the details and degree of the effort. He completed the philosophical expansion of pre-qin effort with “movement and quietness”,and replaced “little appetency” with “non-appetency”,and basically completed the final structure of Confucian effort theory. And through the elucidation of morality, wealth and sage,it is explained that sanctification is the necessity for Confucian to seek self-transcendence.Finally,compared with Buddhism,Zhou Dunyi established the rationality of“ethics” and interpreted the real life of “five elements”to give the foundation of“sense-feeling” theory of human nature and cosmology. But in Chinese Buddhism, especially the zen Buddhism, its basic spirit are actually very consistent with Zhou Dunyi. His “thought”--the “energy” of the essence of mind becomes the corresponding form of the ontology of life. The value metaphysical significance of this transcendental but intrinsic “dynamic and static yin-yang” not only reflects the value of human beings, but even its basis is the value of human beings. In fact,“dynamic and static yin-yang” constitutes the general principle of zhou zi's consideration of the body and time.It specifically indicates two different directions but in fact is a time path.
