Object visualizers were found to outperform than spatial visualizers on object working memory tasks,this advantage results from the higher neural efficiency of object visualizers than spatial visualizer during the retention stage rather than encoding stage in object visual working memory(VWM).However,it's still unclear whether the same outcomes would be observed if more complex items were used which require feature binding,a potentially more demanding task.Despite some studies had reported that the object visualizers' advantage in maintaining feature binding than spatial visualizers.The mechanism for this remains unclear.Attention plays an important role in VWM.Some evidence has suggested that object-based attention underlies the rehearsal of feature binding in VWM.How does it modulate the representation of feature binding between two type of visualizers in VWM?Adopting change-detection paradigm,current research conducted three experiments to explore above problems.We used Object-Spatial Imagery Questionnaire –Revised to categorize participants into object visualizers and spatial visualizers.The materials were color and shape feature and color shape binding objects.Experiment 1 studied the difference between two type of visualizers while maintaining feature or feature binding in VWM task by manipulating the time which participants had to maintain the memory array.Experiment 2 studied whether these two types of individuals were affected differently when the object-based attention was consumed by feature report task.In experiment 3,we used event related potentials(ERP)technology to further examine the effects of object-based attention on different visualizers when they rehearsed feature binding in VWM.The results showed that object visualizers performed better when maintaining feature binding for a longer delay than spatial visualizers.Therefore,they(object visualizers)were more effected by occupation of object-based attention than spatial visualizers.ERP results revealed that when object-based attention was consumed,the mean amplitude of negative slowwave was decreased significantly for object visualizers.On the contrary,that decrease were not observed for spatial visualizer.We come to the following conclusions.1.Object visualizers perform more stable than spatial visualizers in maintaining feature binding in VWM as the time went by.2.Object visualizers spent more object-based attention than spatial visualizers in maintaining feature binding in VWM.3.During the retention stage of VWM,object visualizers spend less resources when object-based attention is consumed,whereas spatial visualizers do not.Compare to Spatial visualizers,object visualizers can engage object-based attention resource more efficiency during the retention stage of VWM.
