The two world wars in the first half of the 20 th century were the most catastrophic wars in human history and a catastrophe in the history of human civilization. Before World War I,the modern movement led by William Morris and others spread the concept of avant-garde modernist design to Western countries. The outbreak of World War I interrupted the dissemination of advanced design ideas. It was only after the war's reflection that modernist design ideas began to develop in European countries. The development of modern design ideas is inextricably linked with the two world wars. This paper will discuss the development of design during the two world wars.By comparing the products designed before, during and after the war, this paper criticizes the negative effects of the two world wars on the development of modern design, studies the application and practice of design concepts in different countries during this period, and explores how modern design ideas change because of the war. Finally, from the perspective of designers, this paper analyses the moral and ethical criticism faced by designers in the shadow of war and the choices made by designers in this period. This paper aims to have a clear understanding and criticism of the changes and development of design history during the two world wars.
