Feng Xiaogang has drawn the attention of the public by three New Year movies of his in the 1990s,the Dream Factory,Be There or Be Square and Sorry Baby,whose New Year comedies have achieved great box-office results with creative style of wits and satire based on stories of common people,and the kind of movies has gradually become Feng Xiaogang's "movie brand".However,Feng was not satisfied with commercial accomplishments that he had achieved,and started to conduct an exploration and creation in the field of serious art.He also payed an increasingly more attention to the deep humanities inside a movie than the box office,and his works were converted from commercial movies to art ones.After the study of Feng's non-comedy movies,it is not difficult to find that through the movies spread the characteristics of Feng's works:The director consciously chooses certain literature novels and makes the recreation out of these in which he involves "Feng's soft feelings" and his individual and artistic values are also embodied;Besides,he plays a role of a scriptwriter which causes the fading function of the position and reinforces the personal attributes of the director himself in a movie.On the basis of the recreation of the existent literature works by Feng Xiaogang,this paper tries to compare five non-comedy movies of Feng's style that hit the screen recently and Feng's comedies to explore the style and characteristics of the director.In chapter one,the category of non-comedy movies mainly discussed in the paper is clarified and the study of the movies is made from the perspective of reality.In chapter two,analyzed in the angle of the theme and values,the movies depict humane care of the ordinary people in history,illustrate varies sides of human nature and glorify the goodness of humanity,and show the care of the director towards the salvation of spirit and contemplation towards the meaning of life.In chapter three,in the aspect of narration of the movies,Feng does well in revealing the grand historical events in the eyes of the common through the ups and downs of ordinary people in history,and irony which expresses Feng's limited criticism to the reality.In chapter four,in the side of hearing,sounding and language use of the movies,the director selects the scenes which build a realistic atmosphere.He also adopts the alteration of darkness and brightness in the movies to push the development of the plots,and uses hues and music to unfold the background of a certain epoch when the story happens.
